FSLogix Intros “Office 365 Container” for Citrix Environments

Article by Brad Rowland.

New release promises to make all the pieces work together, and super-charge Outlook performance

After winning “Best of Synergy 2015” last year, FSLogix made another big product announcement this year at Citrix Synergy 2016.  According to the press release, their latest product, FSLogix™ Office 365 Container for Citrix,  is the industry’s “first drop-in solution that enables true Cached Exchange Mode for all virtual workspaces using Office 365, and real time search for virtual desktops”.  It also claims to install in minutes, and allows enterprises to virtualize and persist OST files for users with XenApp, Terminal Services, and non-persistent or ‘pooled’ virtual desktop infrastructure.  In addition to addressing email and search performance, the features in their upcoming beta will be critical settings for Office 365 such as OneDrive cache, Skype for Business global address list (GAL), and Windows search database now persist between sessions.

The straightforward goal with this FSLogix release is to get Office 365 performance to be as good or better on a virtual workspace than it is on a desktop.  According to BradRowland, FSLogix CMO, most Citrix admins don’t realize at the start of their Office 365 pilot that a lot of this functionality isn’t going to work on XenApp (or pooled-XenDesktop) the way they expect it to. “We’ve been helping companies who totally stalled on their XenApp expansion because end users couldn’t live without the basics, like enterprise level email performance,” said Rowland.

Since Office 365 is becoming a key strategic project for CIOs, it’s super important to make it work properly on internal and cloud based virtual desktops.  Industry guru, Dr. Benny Tritsch, Principal Consultant at DrTritsch.com and RDS Gurus, says that FSLogix is continuing their “no compromise” approach, and that they, “…continue to strongly innovate with solutions that are improving the overall quality and performance of the virtual desktop for both the administrator and the end user.”

FSLogix believes the entire industry can move faster to release innovations that will make “ubiquitous” cloud desktops a reality, literally having your virtual workspace “anywhere and everywhere” without compromising enterprise class performance.  Since I’ve been on their last several beta’s, I think they’re already making huge progress in making it simple for admins and giving end users the kind of performance they need to want a virtual desktop instead of a traditional desktop.

“The virtual desktop model has long promised to streamline IT and create the ultimate in business agility and end-user productivity, but is a long way from becoming the default workspace model for the enterprise,” said Rowland. “FSLogix will continue to build on the pioneering work of companies like Citrix, who are revolutionizing in this space, and help CIOs look to this use case as the primary model for the future.  The virtual workspace should be a key enabler of other strategic initiatives like Office 365, BYOD, and the workplace without borders.”

FSLogix™ Office 365 Container For Citrix provides:

True Cached Exchange Mode – with patent-pending OST containerization, Outlook on XenApp and XenDesktop can now function and perform as if locally installed on a high performance workstation.  Users don’t need to compromise email and calendar performance to adopt strategic initiatives like virtual desktops.
Real-Time Search – enables inbox and personal folder search to work as designed on XenDesktop, with maximum performance, and no workarounds requiring end-user training or unique behavior between physical and virtual environments.
Plug and Play management – features a micro-application footprint with drop-in installation, GPO templates, simple rules based configuration, and the use of existing CIFS/SMB servers, improving the ROI of existing enterprise infrastructure.
Infrastructure compatibility – works on all major virtual desktop and hosted email solutions, complimenting profile management products traditionally used in virtual workspace environments.
Affordable pricing – with an expected retail list price of $10 per user, there’s no barrier to making email on virtual desktops enterprise class.
